The Epistle to James is a relatively short letter written to the larger Christian community. Both its date of origin and its authorship has been disputed from the third century at the latest onward. Some attribute it to James the Great, some to James the Less, some to James the brother of Our Lord, and some to an unknown author “borrowing” the name. However, by the time the New Testament canon was set, its place was assured until the Reformation, when the author’s insistence that “Faith without works is dead” conflicted with the Reformers' insistence on sola fidei, “By faith alone.” This book of the Bible, however, survived the Reformation and is still considered canonical by most groups today. It is a broad ranging document but still following the general theme of personal practical behaviour being integral to the Christian life.
